Amateur sets record, shares lead at British Open
After a day of windy and unpredictable golf from many in the field, the biggest surprise wasn't Rory McIlroy showing he's human by posting a score over par. Instead, the story so far is the 20 year old amateur, Tom Lewis, shooting 5 under and being tied for the lead with Thomas Bjorn, who is literally twice his age. Lewis, who set a record amateur score with a 65 and is only amateur to be winning a major since 1968 after the first round. To add to his spectacular day, Lewis also played with legendary golfer Tom Watson, whom Lewis' father had named him after. Whether or not the amateur can maintain his lead is another story, as many witnessed today how much of a round's score can be at the mercy of the conditions and lucky/unlucky bounces at Royal St. George.
